A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
