The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in September and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.
