The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
