The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: How a Man I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Land the Position That Changed My Life

During the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Since my friend was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had planned a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a big multi-story edifice on the UWS named International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we got some food, took a seat, and began chatting with other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been working on studies with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – adjacent to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I consider applying for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that after dark. The engineering student walked over to me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but right away informed my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a place where anything feels possible – she said: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his full name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in multiple respects. I lacked the confidence or self-belief to reach out at an Ivy League university and request employment. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university led me to a position in Switzerland where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
