Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.
Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of participating.
"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.
"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."
Injury History
Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.
Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.
He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Backup Options
In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
